Having been out of Practice for 7 years I definitely need to update my knowledge in these areas before going self employed and I would love recommendations from others as to the best way to do this. I have been looking at the IAB Level 4 Diploma in Personal and Business tax which seems to be what I need, but am very open minded about what I do if anyone has any better ideas.
The problem with tax is that you have to buy the books every year.
Every year (#1) I buy the latest copy of Taxation by Alan Melville and the Kaplan (#2) ACCA study text for paper P6 (Advanced Taxation) (#3)
ACCA advanced taxation is to my mind the level that people need to know. Its not dark side taxation that people learn for the CTA qualification, it's just good practical stuff that people actually use in their day to day work.
Melville whilst simpler than the P6 text is THE go to book for tax and if you only wanted to buy one tax book that would be the one.
Its around £75 for the two but you really don't need anything else as they cover the entire spectrum.
Hope that helps,
Shaun.
#1 except this year where I have now started alternating the two books. This year was P6, next year will be Melville again.
#2 more examples driven than the BPP version of the book
#3 if you've absolutely got to kill someone by clubbing them to death with a book then the Kaplan P6 text is the one that you want. it's A4 sized and around 6cm in depth.

Thanks Shaun, that is just the sort of advice I was looking for and will mean I can still gain he knowledge that I need without taking any exams. I have just been googling and Taxation looks like it will fit the bill perfectly. I wouldn't even have thought of the Kaplan P6 text either, but if it is as multifunctional as you have said, then after a few years I will be able to reach the kitchen window without having to climb on the worktop
