How to be self employed?
Permalink Closed

Hi All,

I want to know how a language tutor can be self employed with the HMRC in the UK. I have a friend who is from Italy who is now gonna offer Italian lessons. He will be earning around 5k in about 3 or 4 months, so is well beyond the nic threshold of £5885. How the initial set up is to be done? I have advised him as below

1. open a new bank ac in the uk just for receiving income for the invoices he provides

2. go to https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/registration/newbusiness/introduction , then click on I want to tell HMRC that I am in business and need to register for a new tax or tell HMRC that the company is now active, then next

Create an a/c for me

I hope this is the correct thing? also i have told him to fill cf10 , so he doesnt have to pay 2.70 a week towards class 2 nic.

The link below says he can be registered for self employment  as well and apply for exemption.

https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/shortforms/form/CWF1ST?dept-name=CWF1&sub-dept-name=&location=40&origin=http://www.hmrc.gov.uk

Please advise?

Thanks
