Registration as self-employed
Permalink Closed

Hi,

I have one question, it may be stupid for you but I think about it all the time because I'm not sure that I made my registration as self-employed correctly. Could you please check if did I use the correct service? I went to this site: https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/registration/newbusiness/introduction , then I clicked: "I want to tell HMRC that I am in business and need to register for a new tax or tell HMRC that the company is now active". Later I have filled some form about my name, date of birth, name of business, NI number, etc. A few minute later I have recieved an email with confirmation "The application with reference number XXXXXXXXXXX submitted by you or your agent to register for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) taxes has been received and will now be verified.". Is that confirmation correct or shoulD I rather recive an information which say for example: "The application with reference number XXXXXXXXXXX submitted by you or your agent to register as self-employed has been received"? Does "registration for HMRC taxes" mean the same as "registration as self-employed"? Will HMRC send to me some confirmation that my application has been verified and I am registered as self-employed? I ask because later I have found this site: https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/shortforms/form/CWF1ST?dept-name=CWF1&sub-dept-name=&location=40&origin=http://www.hmrc.gov.uk and there is written: "Register for self employed only". Maybe should I fill the form on this second site instead of this first one?

Thank you for your reply in advance.

Best greetings,

Mat

You should be fine with what you have done Mat. The registration is as much about signing you up for class 2 NIC as anything else. Call HMRC and ask them if you have been allocated a UTR (Unique Tax Reference) yet. If you haven't explain that you registered and ask them to check progress, all should be fine though.
