What do you charge for.......?
Permalink Closed

I was wondering if people had set charges for certain routine things. I'm currently invoicing out for submitting some Annual Returns, I know some clients do not think I should charge any more than the £13 filing fee but I'm sure others would pay a reasonable amount. I've decided on £25 plus the filing fee.

How about:

Setting up a company? I charge £75 plus vat to include company, vat registration and PAYE registration

Accountants certificate, I have never charged for this but this would be something our value pricing types like Kris would jump on, how much is it worth to a client since they cannot get their mortgage without it!

Passport applications, again I've never charged as I see this as good client relations but again a very valuable service

Anything else that springs to mind?

Hi Rob

As you know all my fees are on my website.

Prices would be as follows

1. Annual Return £50 (but usually do this as part of the overall package for a limited)

2. Setting up Ltd Co £50 (but usually do this FOC if they want me to do the accounts, tax etc).  For instance did this free for a couple of clients in the last few days but their other stuff will be worth £720 each per year.

3. Accountants Certificate.  Probably £200.

4. Passport Application £50.

I see that in a previous post you use IRIS.  How many of a staff do you have?

I am taking on my first employee next week.  Currently use Taxcalc but know will need to probably go for either Digita or IRIS if take on another staff member (which will probably be the case this time next year all being well).

IRIS costs an arm and a leg but know the benefits it brings if you have a number of staff (I used it previously in practice for 15 years).  Digita seems to do much of what IRIS does but at a more reasonable price.

Interesting that you charge £200 and £50 for the mortgage certificate and passport applications. I think I shall start making a charge for the certificate in future but still do the passports for goodwill.

Yes I have Iris, I pay about £6k for the privilege every year, it saves so much time that it is very nearly worth the money! I don't use it for time and fees or anything fancy like that, just accounts production and tax and Company Secretarial. I don't really have staff as such, I keep a self employed bookkeeper busy for 4 days a week, a self employed ACCA qualified chap comes in twice a week or when needed and I have an arrangement with a Chartered Tax Adviser friend who I work with a lot. I employed a part time administrator about ten weeks ago and she has had loads of time off and now she is pregnant so I've not seen her for two weeks and I'm back to 12 hour days and weekends....serves me right for not learning the lesson that I should only use self employed people!

I don't at present but I really ought to.  I tend to charge according to what I'm already do for that client so it can vary.

Rob - What happened to the AAT student you employed a couple of years ago?

I remember the old lady who you interviewed and she said she preferred to play tennis than come to work!

You have a good memory Amanda, I'd forgotten about my tennis player...to be fair it turned out to be Judy Murray after a bit of pin money! The AAT student was quite unlucky and I feel a bit mean getting rid of her after the 7 funerals she attended for grandparents always on a monday!

Maybe she should try concreting over the plot next time that she buries them... Just a helpful suggestion for you to pass on should you see her again :)
