Hello Everyone, I am quite excited to post as I've been looking at many posts for the past week or soo... some are very humorous and I would have enjoyed being part of the banter.
I have worked for 19 years within the care homes industry producing information to managements accounts... this is my issue, new job on Monday as a book keeper (excited), my new employer knows I can process all data required and after a few months of getting to know the new business I know I will be capable of producing management accounts.
My new employer also knows I have not had any working knowledge of VAT and says 'argghhh you'll be fine'
I know the fundamentals, I know insurance, bank charges.etc etc are not subject to VAT, many more I am sure I will look into the history. I am the kinds gal who crosses every 'T' and dots every 'I' - I would die if I made an error of posting.
Would you recommend I take a course in VAT? I have looked at numerous recommendations, webinars, one days sessions, they all cost £200 to £400 per session?
Hi Liz Welcome to the forum and glad you're enjoying it.
I would say, don't pay anything for a VaT course, but instead have a read of the main VAT guide700 direct from HMRCs website, a bit boring but gives you the basics. Also read a couple of the other guides eg how to complete the vat return. Keep an eye on the VAT updates which are update regulary on HMRC s site too, to keel your reading to a manageable level you can restrict it to your industry and expand it over time. Once you've done a chunk of reading sign up for a free HMRC webinar, they run quite a few, and you can ask questions about things you want more info on.
Good luck and if you get stuck feel free to ask.

I don't agree entirely with Joanne! Free HMRC courses provide some help. Sometimes local colleges provide lower-priced VAT courses. I also recommend the basic VAT course provided by UK Training: www.uktrainingworldwide.com/course/VAT-Training-Course.asp - I am biased as I present it sometimes!
