Where to start?

Hello there,

I'm looking to become a self-employed bookkeeper working entirely from home.

In my past life (aka as pre-children), I've done book keeping as part of other employed roles but do not have any bookkeeping qualifications. I do have a good general education.

So, after hours of reading and searching online I'm no closer to deciding how to start studying - there seems to be a wide variety of qualifications offered by many providers.

So, what do you guys think. Which qualification is the best one to start with - pros and cons.  I'd ideally like to study level 1 and 2 at home but am able to make time to take an exam at an assessment centre if necessary.  I can't see that I'd want to go back to employed work, so that's not something I need to take into account when choosing a qualification.

Thanks for reading.

Katrina

Hi Katrina,

Aside from the formal studying (I'm not the best to advise on that), I would say from a practical point of view of getting clients, get to grips with at least one of the cloud accounting solutions. My last three new clients have all wanted this. Xero seems to be the most widely known but I'm putting my lot in with Kashflow as it seems to do pretty much the same but at half the price. Good luck.
