Is IAB the right way to go?
Permalink Closed

Hi

I'm a new poster here, but have been reading some of the posts which I am finding most useful!  I am wanting to start training as a bookkeeper with my aim being to set up myself from home to work around the children.  I've been looking at all the options for a while and had almost definitely decided on doing the IAB courses with Woodgrove Tutorials.  However, after reading some of the posts here I think I am confusing myself with all the options!  I seem to be reading that ICB is the best way to go to become self employed at the end?  Can anyone advise on if IAB is a suitable option for my plans or would I be better looking at ICB courses?

Thanks!

IAB is fine Jenny and Woodgrove tutorials is a good choice of training provider so well done for your research.

At the end of the day though bookkeeping is bookkeeping no matter what colour you paint it.

Both bodies have strengths and differences (some of which I am sure you have seen have been the subject of heated debate on here) but your core is getting the right knowledge base rather than which of those two it is with.

Once you have the base knowledge you will find that the real learning starts on this site (and others) when you are looking at running your practice and market ing your services.

Good luck in your studies and I look forwards to chatting as you progress,

kindest regards,

Shaun.

Thanks Shaun. It's good to know I'm on the right track! It will be summer until I'll be starting but I can't wait and I'm sure I'll be back with loads of questions!

Hi Jenny

I will stick my pennies worth in here, if looking for Self Employment then the ICB in my opinion is BY FAR the better option, opinions, well we all have them so why don't give both the IAB and ICB a call and see what they can offer you by being a member, take a look at their websites to see what they can offer their members, If you do choose the IAB path then Woodgrove and Brian are an excellent choice and he will look after you.

Good Luck
Dave

Thanks Dave. I'll have another look at them both before purchasing a course.

Hi Jenny,

I am currently studying IAB level 3 Award in computerised bookkeeping, after passing my level 2 Manual bookkeeping, and I would say it is great the actual IAB study book is very comprehensive with lots of practise material. You will also get study material from the study provider that you use, but if they do not provide the IAB book I recommend you also purchase the IAB book directly through IAB you can see them for sale on there web site.

Good Luck :)
