I have a client whose bookkeeping I do. I have had a few parking tickets which I have just processed without question and put them to travel.
Now he has handed me quite a lot more of which some appear to be on the same street over the past couple of months. I suspect this is for parking his car at work.
Some are dated in the previous financial year and paid for by Director so would go to Directors Loan account.
I know usually you would say parking at work is not a business expense but what if it was agreed that parking was to be paid for and as it is his own company.
Not sure what to do with this one. Help appreciated.
Hi Elaine, I am not sure why you think parking cannot be claimed. Travel and parking are not the same thing.
Parking at work is currently a tax free benefit which can be paid by an employer.
My sisters ex-mother-in-law's company used to pay for two parking spaces in a car park in Central London. It cost a fortune, but all allowable. Every now and then, the government considers making free parking at work for employees a BIK, but even if it was, it is a allowable business expenses.
