can a company called Fred Bloggs Limited for example change the layout of their invoices to FB Limited? They are vat registered. And I've only just noticed this change on their invoices to customers
No, not unless they have changed their company name (not difficult)
If they have not then they could however put FB (without limited) at the top of the page and then at the footer state that FB is a trading name of Fred Bloggs Ltd. registration number, where registered.
If you need to convince the client just sk the question. What if someone else set up as FB limited?
They own the one name, they do not own all of the derivatives of it. (but, of course they can change the name that they have)
HTH,
Shaun.

Just to add to Shaun's reply, which is as usual, excellent -
you might also need to double check with the business/trading names register just to ensure that "FB" wasn't already copyrighted/patented by someone else.. I don't have massive amounts of legal knowledge on that, so dont know the correct terms, but you get the gist!
Changing Ltd Co name might be favourable
