VAT claim on imports
Permalink Closed

Hi All,

I have recently started a LIGHT business and I will be importing products from China.

I had applied for my VAT on 12th Mar-15,  yet i haven't received it. Now my goods are ready for collection at port in Felixstowe. I got dummy EORI number using which I should be able to clear customs and collect the goods but the VAT i will be paying now, will I be able to claim that?

I just enquired with the VAT department and they said there is a huge back-log of application and still they are processing application of 1st-Mar-15.  so i really don't see it coming through for next two weeks (that includes Easter holidays)

Will I be able to claim VAT on these goods once i get my VAT number?

Regards,

Sonal

The answer is Yes! You will be registered for the date you originally entered on your Application form, even though you will not receive confirmation until a few weeks later. As a matter of completeness, you can claim VAT on import on any goods imported up to 4 years prior to the date of registration, as long as you have not sold those goods before registration.
Hope that makes sense!

Hi All,

Finally after a couple of months wait time, I got the confirmation that my VAT is registered and its registered from early March.

Now my question is I imported the good in mid-march and at that time i did not had the VAT number. I applied for dummy EORI and collected my good from the port by paying the VAT.

I have now got my EORI changed, how should i claim the paid VAT on my import goods?

Regards,

Sonal

Yes, I have seen Les response.

I just wanted to know the process of claiming the VAT. Normally HMRC sends you C79 form but in my case i did not receive it as it was my dummy EORI.

Do I need to call them and ask for the C79? or is there any other process to follow?

Regards,

Sonal

Hi Sonal
Sorry I didnt spot that little word 'how' - I really must slow down and read things properly! Ive only ever had a situation with a wrong VAT number on it, plus I seem to recall some daft HMRC system where you have to write in to get copy C79s. To be honest - the staff on the imports helpline are really helpful so I would be tempted to phone them and see what they say. Sorry I cant help more!
