Lost UTR and changed address dilemma
Permalink Closed

Good morning,

I have a bit of a dilemma with a new client. She has been running a business for a few years and is in a mess with her tax, she knows she owes fines and wants to get them sorted out - which is why she has come to me. The issue is that she has lost her UTR, so she can't access anything online and I can't register as her agent. She should be able to get her UTR sent out to her but she has since moved and fallen out with her ex-landlord who wont forward her mail, she returns it to sender. Beyond her spending a long time trying to get through to HMRC and then trying to explain this to someone in their call centre I can't think of what to suggest. She can't redirect her mail as she has been at her new address for too long so has nothing with her old address details on that is recent enough. She got into this mess partly due to post-natal depression, she knows she has messed up but now just wants it sorted out and is wanting to pay her fines.

Has anyone on here ever had a similar experience? Can anyone suggest any alternative approaches?

Many thanks

Alys

You need to use the paper 64-8 form. Attach a cover letter informing of change of address.

Thanks Phil.

Would they accept the 64-8 without her UTR on it?

PS I would love to attend one of your workshops if they made their way up North a bit!!

If you are able to meet your client, you could call the agent helpline, pass the phone to your client to go through security and then the client can pass the phone back to you so you can explain the situation to HMRC.

The 64-8 with a covering letter should work, but knowing HMRC it could take several weeks!

Ive done what Richard has suggested - so much quicker even though you will probably be on hold for 45 minutes before getting through. From memory I think HMRCs website indicates it could take c6weeks to turn the 64-8 round, although in reality when I last did it, it was a bit quicker, but not by much!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
