Can anyone help please, I have been asked to put on a budgeting course for people who have learning difficulties.

I am really not sure how to implement this. Does anyone have any tips or even a budgeting course to sell that could be adapted.

The course will be run for around 6 weeks.confuse

Hi
Have you ever dealt with anyone who has learning difficulties as if not its probably worth speaking to someone who has, also you need to know the extent of their difficulties as otherwise you wont know wear to pitch it.

Try this as a start point though moneysense.natwest.com/schools/resources

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Yes I totally agree that I should find out the extent of learning difficulties, I cannot imagine that they would be too severe but as I have not met any of the group I should ask the people who have asked me to put them on this course.

I have worked with people with very mild learning difficulties but in a totally different aspect.  To be honest I cannot see them sitting through 6 sessions of budgeting, in fact I cannot see anyone being overjoyed by 6 weeks of budgeting!

So yes thank you for the link I will get straight onto it and see what I can do.  Thanks once again for you input, much appreciated.

Kind regards

Sue

Make it fun, and very much relate it to real life and you will be surprised at how well they will probably do with it to be honest. Go with lots of props and it will be fine. Maybe get them to plan a shopping list, HO buy it and make something.....if you have access to a kitchen then making their own lunch or cakes or something can teach the a lot. We did that with a bunch of teenagers and they loved it, made it more real.Good luck with it

Hi thanks, I totally agree with you, I have looked at the site you recommended and have picked up some great ideas. Yes I had thought of buying certain foods, branded and shops' own brand and do a taster session to see if the branded are worth paying more for.
There isn't access to a kitchen but have thought about 'cooking on a budget' and recording someone doing it and showing this is 'class' giving the students a picture and text leaflet to take home.

Thanks for the suggestions and help...I will let you know how it goes.

Cheers
Sue

It may be of no help at all but the open university used to do a introductory level course called 'managing your money' or something like that, to do with budgeting - if you google it it might be some help?
