VAT on EU Hotels
Permalink Closed

I'm doing the accounts for a client who travels quite a bit around Europe and one stay (So far) in America.

They are VAT registered. As I understand, I have to make a claim to each tax authority to reclaim any VAT?

How would I record the invoice in the accounts? Would I use the gross amount and not record UK VAT on the invoice in the accounts?

I would record the gross amounts, and then adjust the VAT if and when it arrives.

Interesting - was just pondering this one myself as I have a client who travels quite a bit in Germany, although Im still waiting for his hotel receipts! Do you know how easy (or difficult!!) it is to make the claims?

it may be easier if your client is just staying in one country. It seems a bit of a minefield!

Germany is the one he most frequents, although there are quite a few other places as well, including the US. Just thought I might focus on one at a time.

I have previously used these people: www.quipsound.com/Home
they take a fee, of course, but worth considering.

Thanks Les , I will have a look at this, although my biggest problem is getting receipts in the first place, but the fact I might get all the VAT back might focus the mind!
