Accounting for EU Purchases
Permalink Closed

Hi,

the company I work for have bought 2 domain names in Italy and France.  The company supplying these names is in Melbourne Australia.

The invoice is in Euro's and states that the amount includes 20% VAT.

Struggling with how to deal with this one on the VAT return.

Should it be part of the reverse charge or should it be part of the input VAT and claimed in the usual way?

Hi Elaine

Oz don't have a 20% VAT rate, so its definitely not Oz VAT. The only thing I can think of, is that they are VAT registered in the UK? Much like if you sell over 100,000 euros worth of goods/services to Germany, you have to register for German VAT? Is there anything resembling a UK VAT number on the invoice? Have you asked them what would happen if you gave them your clients VAT number? If it was RC, there would be no VAT charged, with a note saying RC was to applied.. I think!

Thanks Michelle,

That is very useful. I cannot see a VAT number on the invoice so I have contacted the supplier directly for confirmation.

I've tried looking on HMRC website but it's a minefield!!

Don't fancy trying to phone them as it will take about an hour on hold

Elaine
