A CIC is not a charity, but no you do not get tax relief.

I wondered if Fiona just meant she was offering to do the work for free. Or a misunderstanding of a CIC.

Would be great to get some tax relief, but then I guess our work wouldnt be seen as charitable.

Hi F.C.?

Working for free means no income, so no relief to be had on it.

If you earn money on it, it's part of your taxable income.

biggrinhi Michelle - I did wonder about the F.C. bit - some kind of footy club! Sorry football on the brain. But its Fiona's initials.

Fiona - can you please add your name in full - makes Michelle a happy bunny!

Thanks for your comments.. the relevant ones anyway!

I was offering to do work for free. I am aware a CIC is not a charity but are the differences huge in relation to bookkeeping? We still have to record all donations/grants by project and log all other income/expenditure appropriately. It's still a non profit organisation. Please enlighted me if there any big differences I should take into consideration though

ps.. does it matter what my name is ?

The irrelevant one's are more fun though. It's what keeps the people here sane (or at least close to it) as the fun side of the forum makes it feel more as though one is working in a team rather than alone.

Yes, how else would the other people in your house know what to call you. lol.

People are only after a first, not full name.

It's actually a current campaign so that when we are talking to people our responses come accross more politely.

Its also traditional that you first post an introduction so that we know who we are talking to enabling us to gear our responses accordingly. i.e. we would not answer a newly qualified ICB poster in the same way as (say) an ICAEW one. The answers would be the same but the way that the responses are phrased would be different.

Kindest regards,

Shaun.

Just left click their userid Michelle...

Oops, sorry Jo, I've just diluted your power. lol.

Jo,

the slight delay between postings was caused by an attack on the site by someone using several different user names.

When people are banned its now by IP Address rather than user name plus the built in delay gives myself or Steve time to react. It's only a very short window but it's enough to stop a sustained attack... Well, at least of the type that was perpetrated that time.

Good afternoon Shaun.

Fortunately I have other powers, although some of those are failing me too this week! I did email Michelle and gave her the inside scoop.

Bloomin heck if you or Steve can react in that short space of time I am well impressed. You know me - sooooo impatient. Although it explains why you are tied to a chair by the Christmas tree lights and are wearing blinkers so you only look at the screen 24/7.

Hi Fiona    (just easier to have your name and better than 'oi you', although Im used to answering to that!)

You could charge them for your time.

Have you had a look at this - lots of info about what needs doing - its not massively different tbh....https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/office-of-the-regulator-of-community-interest-companies

 Hi Fiona

A CIC is exactly the same as a limited company.  They just have certain restrictions and need to add a CIC report when they file abbreviated accounts. If limited by guarantee, no dividends can be taken.  They also have an asset cap which means all assets have to be used solely for the CIC, not personally... that how I understand it at the moment, having just been appointed to one, myself.
