Charging family
Permalink Closed

Hi all , Another day any other problem :) at least today's problem is only small ! So I've been approached by a family member , ones a limited company and ones self assessment . My issue with these are what to charge . I have my standard fees I charge everyone ( hourly rates etc ) but as there family , what do I do ? Would you discount hourly rate ? Or give them a set price with so much taken off ? My backgrounds industry so I still feel unconfortabke charging people , so prefer to send time sheets broken down . But I am thinking about pricing jobs at set amounts per month etc Any ideas ? Thanks guys .

Hi again Nicola
This doesnt really answer your question, but dont the AAT say not to do the books of family - under their ethics guidelines?

Under the fixed charges issue/value pricing/hourly rate - there is a lot on here arguing both ways - do a bit of a search and you will see a few post posts on the subject. I have a couple on fixed, but mostly hourly as they were hard to pin down on requirements and boy am I glad I am. You have to get your questioning exactly right and put some parameters in place with fixed otherwise if they explode/start doing well or go off in another business direction then you can end up seriously under charging.

Hi Cheshire , I'm sorry for late response I've been in Scotland with work. I checked with AAT in regards to family , and they said as long as we do our usual due diligence and risk assessment family is fine . Thanks for the advice . When I seen there where only 3 months worth of receipts (he was Paye rest of year ) I wasn't as concerned . Nic xx
