CT Returns and Payment dates
Permalink Closed

Good morning!

I am looking for dates for filing Annual Returns, Company Tax Returns and Payment Dates.

Am I correct in thinking that the Company Tax Return is filed with the Year End Accounts no later than 9 months after year end?  Any corporation tax due must be paid within 9 months of the year end?

The Annual Return should be filed 12 months after the company has been registered?

Sorry so many questions. I am working with 5 different companies, all with different year ends and I want to get things organised blankstare

Its a bit of a strange one in that common practice is out of line with the rules.

I'll tell you what the rules are and see if you can spot the sequence error here!

Company tax returns are due 12 months after the end of the accounting period.

Payment of corporation tax owed is due nine months and one day after the end of the accounting period

Filing with companies house is nine months (unlike the CT not nine months and a day!!!) after the end of the accounting period.

Full accounts are filed with HMRC (visible only to HMRC)

Abreviated accounts are filed with companies house (Visible to everyone)

Did you spot the sequence error? yep, you have to pay HMRC their tax three months before you obliged to tell them how much you owe them.

Strange anomaly that Shaun, and always one that has made me chuckle.  In practice it's always best to file the CT within the 9 months, imo

It's also worth pointing out that the first companies house return is a year to the date the Company was set up, after that it's the end of that month.

The first time I saw that about the CT filing v accounts to HMRC, I think I mustve read it about 6 times thinking I had read it wrong and wasnt concentrating enough!

Karen - its also worth mentioning that the due dates are updated on the companies house website.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
