I was just looking through Amazon and they are still selling Quickbooks 2016. I was under the impression they were going all online and no desktop.
Its £175 at the minute (but camelcamel had it down at £100 a couple of weeks ago).
Would this be software a accountant/bookkeeper can use on multiple businesses? As far as I have googled it does.
Any opinions on Quickbooks? I currently use VT, but I need to start doing more management accounting/forcasting/stock tracking type stuff for my husbands business and now my Father in law wants me to help manage his business... Plus I want something more robust for doing invoices than just excel. It would be nice to have it all in one package, but I hate the idea of paying monthly haha!
They are certainly pushing the online version to the detriment of the desktop version, so much so that you need a magnifying glass to find it on their website! £175 isn't bad for the premier version though and yes, it's multiple company.
I'm a VT user too but I don't rate their invoices at all. I use a standalone invoice program called Sliq, which is really good.

Quickbooks do have some good offers on Amazon, but yes do be careful its the disc/perpetual version you are buying. I understand premier and pro are the multi versions but Im not sure on the differences - worth a check. I do have quickbooks but only use it for a charity I look after as Ive never spent time learning just what it can do. There are a few quick book users on here for if you get stuck with anything and as with sage their help files are good, the online help (via google searches) often brings up American stuff but you can still get what you need by the looks of most of it and there is a good Dummies book out there - most libraries have a copy if you dont want to spend more cash.

Yes, you can have up to 99 different businesses on one single QuickBooks desktop program. Its a single user program, but you can buy additional licences so that it can become multiple user version if there is more than one of you going to need to work in the program at the same time. Otherwise, as a single user, you can have it one more than one PC - i.e. on your desktop and laptop - legally.
The difference between the Pro and the Premier versions is mainly down to the reports and budgets - the Pro version is perfectly good enough for everyday businesses.
The 2016 version onwards is by monthly licence only if you have the payroll subscription - and the program generally (without payroll) is soon to go over to subscription only, so buying the program outright now would be a good idea if you want to be able to use it for your clients accounts in your office. It will be supported for up to 3 years by Intuit - after that, it wont stop working, just not be supported. So if a new version of Windows or something comes out, you may hit issues, but by then, you'd probably just 'convert' from the Desktop to the Online version in one easy step anyway.
If you buy off Amazon, just make sure its the UK version - you don't want to be calculating Canadian or USA taxes!!
Not sure if I'm allowed to say this - but if you're interested in an unopened, unregistered Pro 2015 - I have one that I'd sell for £50 - there's very little difference between the 2015 and 2016 versions and this would be good for Intuit updates support up to 2018.

Thanks, I took the plunge and bought it off Amazon this afternoon. I remembered I had 5% off with ICB benefits so was not too bad a price.
I spoke to someone at quickbooks on their chat thing and they pointed me towards the desktop as I do the keying of paperwork for clients. The online accounts only seemed to be overview of clients keying and I'm guessing the small business side would be one busines only.
I hope its UK! Got me worried now. Will see in a day or so. It has however jumped back up to £200, so fingers crossed!
I did want something to do budgeting/forecasting as I manage my husband business too.
The Online version has it's place - ideal if a client is keying in their own sales info, and you're doing the rest. You can both work on the file at the same time - your client at his premises and you in your office. The clients Accountant can also have a log in to get end of year info etc too, but you're right, each online version is for one client only.
Good Luck

Hi I've got the software and have been playing around, looks very different to VT! Is there any good guides/training for the out there? All the tutorials on Quickbooks are for the online program.

Hi Kundan
These courses are US led - ouch on the prices of the first one! The second link might be useful in part - question is, does the UK version look the same as the US? Not sure if you are able to answer that but would be interested in one of our quickbooks experts seeing if they would be of any use.

I'm starting to worry about desktop software, not just the software itself, but the whole way things seems to be going - towards the cloud.
I remember when desktop software, especially the big two, was ridiculously expensive. Now, by all accounts, you can run a practice for the price of what was once the cost to a single business.
From an advisory point of view I do worry how much work is being taken away from bookkeepers and accountants. Especially to those who service small businesses.
I haven't really delved too much into the cloud, aside from various free trials to see what all the buzz is about. My understanding is, client inputs receipts and invoices, they themselves can do various other things - how can accuracy been attained?
Will said client send to drawings all non business related expenses?....
In approx 2020 there is to be a new system for SA returns......What shall this bring? Where is the accuracy??? I see one hell of a potential mess looming. Successful business man completing everything from bookkeeping to SA returns on his android? HMRC inspectors will have a field day. Oh and remember dear sole trader, ignorance of the law excuses no man.
*Apologies for off topic grumble*

Loll John. If you do a quick search your grumble has been had many a time already by a few of yours, so grumble away. Although it's not usually a Friday night when we see such!!

Off topic is good and its an issue thats been mentioned on here previously that we have the ridiculous situation that HMRC are incentivising people to do it themselves where they are the one's who benefit when people get it wrong either by not claiming what they could or if they claim what they should not, fining them.
Maybe what we should really be doing is using our qualifications to apply to be tax inspectors... Lol... The exodus is normally in the other direction!

A great Victorian Ledger that one of my clients used as a cashbook (it was a book they found when they started their business). When they eventually stopped using it they allowed me to keep it as they knew that I absolutely loved the thing.
When I finally get to open my own accountancy practice I'm using "Cratchet and Scrooge" as my business model... Bah Humbug.

I thought you already had your own practice Shaun?
John, I think your post is worthy of it's own thread, would you mind doing that? Your sentiments echo mine to a large extent and I was going to start a thread on it myself. If it was in its own thread we might get some more contributors and have an interesting discussion.

No John, I cannot have an accountancy practice until I've completed my PCTR.
Currently I have a bookkeeping practice (up to trial balance) and also seperately perform accountancy services under the ACCA practice certificate supervision of a Chartered practice.
I don't think that there will be any lack of contributors but its a Friday night and its always a bit quiet on Fridays.

Cheers John just need to convince the ACCA of that now
Still a couple of years to go yet .

This one is yet again digging up old posts! Last time didn't answer the question that was asked on a post from the year dot And even though she has now clearly been back on the site has not commented on it despite being pulled up by Vince. Now dropping links to their US based product which frankly is ridiculously expensive and is just a hosting service for the likes of quickbooks.
Never mind that 2018 version is already out in the UK. Bloody stupid American spammers.

Think that America's been framed again there as the poster strangely seems to have flown all the way from Dallas to Haryana in the Gurgaon province of India just to post that!
