Farm Accounts
Permalink Closed

Hi

I was wondering if anyone particularly specialises in farm accounts.

Due to my location I deal with a lot of farmers/ smallholders and similar agricultural based industries. I do have some knowledge and I particularly enjoy this area even though farmers are a certain breed and can take some skillfull handling.  I find they appreciate an honest approach and it helps not to show up in my best suit and jimmy choo heels!

Anyway, I would like to market myself as a specialist in this area so I would like to further my knowledge and I wondered if anyone knew of any suitable publications or even courses based around this.

I'm sure there will be some words of caution as I am aware this is not everyones cup of tea but I look forward to hearing peoples experiences.

Thanks

Valerie

Hi Valerie,

similar to yourself this is an area that I would like to specialise in (I was brought up around farming. Mainly horses but also some dairy).

The things that you need to read in this area are IAS41 which is the international financial reporting standard peculiar to agriculture plus there's a Bloomsbury book on the subject. Hang on a sec as it's in my Amazon save for later list whilst I wait for it to come down to a price that I can justify when I currntly have no farm clients.

I'm back, did you miss me. This is the book :

www.amazon.co.uk/Tax-Planning-Farm-Land-Diversification/dp/1780439792/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0

For Bloomsbury guides its one of the smaller ones so for £123.50 for 592 pages you can probably see why its still sitting in my buy later bucket (along with another 81 accountancy books!... And I used to think thatr IT related books were expensive!!!).

like yourself I'll be watching this thread with interest so many thanks for posting the question (and for the one a week or so back about agricultural building. At least I was able to offer more direct constructive assistance with that one where this one is just a couple of pointers to the right reading matertial.

kindest regards,

Shaun.

WOW that is an expensive book, or maybe I have already adopted the farmer mentality!

I am glad to hear that I am not completely mad and alone, it is a really interesting area and farmers may have their quirks but I just love them.  It may take a while to gain their trust but then I just find them incredibly loyal.

Your help with the agricultural building was much appreciated. I look forward to the day when I too may offer some expertise!

Valerie

I had the opportunity to look after a farmers book about 5 -6 months ago, but I didnt go for it as they wanted someone for more hours than I had capacity for at the time.

Its certainly a great idea to specialise - whereabouts are you based?

I want to delve more into the sports TV presenter field. Planning a meet up with a Sky contact, hopefully after the Euro Championship is out of the way, but if anyone has any useful bits and bobs about that I would be grateful!

Say if it's Wenger ;) I'd be thinking, I don't know of course... Domicile status - tax. Image rights. Charitable work. Do they receive any revenue from any trademarks. Subsistence - hotels. Public appearances. Maybe look out for crafty tax schemes already being used...do they have staff, are they using domestic payroll for the cleaner, etc etc. I'm babbling now - you know this already :)

Hi Joanne

I'm in North Yorkshire so fairly rural and I am finding I am having a lot of recommendations from my current farmers so it makes sense to try and capitalise on this. Often theses farmers are diversifying as well so I can find myself with livery yards/ holiday cottages/ tearooms etc.

TV presenting, wow thats worlds apart from my field but sounds very interesting. Good luck with the meeting

Valerie

Hi Valerie

a lovely part of the UK!   Don't blame you for wanting to capitalise on this one, go for it.  Personally think recommendations are the best way to get new business so why not.

I love working with the TV/media companies, brings more than just pure bookkeeping, so all nice and varied.

thanks for the 'good luck'. Same to you. Let us know how you get on in the coming months.

Ha, nothing to do with Arsenal. Top flight though, ex player/manager/coach now pundit and more. Prolific In UK and worldwide. Yes foreign. Written books. Lots of Uk/ foreign tax issues, UK and foreign VAT issues.  But definitely no craft tax schemes- won't  touch them with a bargepole!  Not my words!!!  Dying to get my hands on more of this sort of business. I love it, but still loads I could learn.
