Hi there, my names Phil and Im a fairly recently qualified bookkeeper, I've passed level 2 and 3 with the ICB. Reading through the forum posts I see that ICB is not that highly regarded, but I believe the qualification will serve the purpose i need in setting up as a self employed bookkeeper. I live down in deepest southwest Cornwall.

My main problem is a lack of experience/confidence to actually go for it. I did start off my employment career as a trainee accountant but that was 15 years ago and a number of factors led to me leaving after about 9 months.

Anyway I was wondering if the Bookcert business kit would be of any use to me in helping me to get started. Any reviews of it seem to be at least a couple of years old so I'm a bit unsure if it's worth doing?

Has anybody else used it?

Hi Phil
Welcome to the forum.

Just a suggestion - if you can bob your name so that it appears under the signature at the bottom, will save us all looking up your name each time we post. You can do this by editing your profile.

So - what have you been doing for the last 15 years after you departed the Accountancy scene and then were drawn back into this mad old world?

What are your ideas/plans for your business - are you sticking to bookkeeping up to TB/continuing with an existing job whilst you build up your business? Do you have any clients at the moment? From seeing others posts on here it seems that others generally get started by doing the books of local charities. That starts you off with that real world practice which might then help with confidence.

I havent used Bookcert myself so cannot advise on that one, but what I can say is that your learning as a bookkeeper really starts with real clients and I would advise whilst you have the time to start reading the VAT Guide 700 and then as many of the other guides as you can which you think will relate to the type of clients you are looking to gain.

Whereabouts are you in Cornwall. You could be close to a regular poster on here - Rachel. She might be shooting poisoned darts across to you as we speak for stomping on her patchwink

Whether you use Bookcert or not - good luck with the business.

Unless of course Bill (Wella) has already killed Rachel for stomping on his patch!

Hi Phil,

welcome to the forum.

yep, as indicated above, the hunger games was actually based on looking at how Bookkeepers and accountants build their area biggrin

talk later,

Shaun.

Mornin Joanne... Actually, really is afternoon now.

yep, another one of those Saturdays that you cannot tell the difference from any other day of the week.

Actually, you could be right, we used to have a load of bookkeepers from Cornwall who posted on a regular basis and now there's just Rachel... Guess that she got to the bow first!

Hi Joanne and Shaun, thanks for the replies. I've been working for a builders merchants for the last 15 years, it was a brand new venture at the time set up by some friends of mine who got me involved, so I feel part of the furniture!. But there has always been a nagging in my head to get back into accountancy at some level, and life just fell right about 12 months ago to allow me to do some study whilst I have dropped the number of hours working at the builders merchants to fit around my hectic family life ( 4 young children).
I went with the ICB as I felt that self employed would be my only option, I'm not sure that many employers would consider a 40 year old for a junior position, plus financially it would not be a viable option either.
I have no clients yet, but my niche will probably to go for builders, plumbers, electricians etc as I know their business well, and I also know how disorganised they can be from having to chase them for account payments over the years!
I have looked locally for some voluntary work to gain some experience but have found nothing yet, I know I should just go for it but I need a kick!
I will definitely look at the guide you suggested and just gain as much knowledge as I can, and I intend to work around my current job too.
Just reading through the posts on the forum has taught me a lot, so thank you for that, it seems a really helpful place!

Not that far from Rachel then!

So - you are intending going pact TB as you will be completing self assessments and then accounts for sole traders. Will you be able to pick up clients through your existing workplace?

Other things you need to be learning then, given your potential client base - changes is contractor legislation, CIS, capital allowances - bit of light reading before the clients start, whilst you still have time as that lot will serve you well.

It has been a couple of year since I heard someone bring up 'bookcert'

A couple of books I'd push you towards are -

David Cox - Business accounts
Frank Woods - Business accounting.

Both great books.

You could of course say buy the six level 3 AAT books to study from. But having said that you'd want the newest VAT text.

I'd say for under £50, you'd have some great reading material in the above.

All opinion of course

:)

Joanne notices the chair.

I notice the OS and think "Yeuck!"

Still, at least the Windows 10 "free" update period is over as of yesterday. Now I can set up my "new" (just over one year old) PC. I'm going to try to set it to dual boot Windows and Linux; Windows for that software for which I need it, and Linux for everything else.

Using a Linux Mint bootable USB stick, I've had a play on Linux. Unfortunately, I couldn't get my copy of Sage running under Wine. I've not tried VT. I also tried the "big" accounts software for Linux, Gnu Cash, and concluded it isn't a good replacement for the Windows software. Hence the need to keep Windows going... for now.

Much as I hate cloud stuff, one thing it has going for it is that because it's accessed using the web browser it doesn't need Windows - so for my cloudy clients, I can use Linux.

Haha I nearly said "Vince, quick look, Johnny's using Windows 10"

Speaking of Linux, last Christmas I gave my sis in law an old xp computer, but replaced it with Linux mint, as they really only used it for the internet.  Later they bought a printer, and try as I might, I could not set it up.  They've replaced the comp now but I was quite annoyed I couldn't configure it.  I consider myself IT savvy when working on Windows machines, but have absolutely no experience of Linux other than the installation I've mentioned.

Aside from all those at Microsoft now knowing what I have for tea, it isn't too bad.

Its universal, windows, not 10 - so most software runs pretty smoothly. Always compatibility mode for older drivers no longer serviced old printers and all that!

It was freeeeeee, bonus; obviously nothing is free, there is always a catch, only God knows what information and data I've unknowingly donated to Microsoft.

I like Linux, together with OS, don't mind the odd play with the Pi either - But, like it or lump it :) Windows just gets it done. Although I'm not a fan of windows in 4K ATM unless it is on a reasonably sized monitor.

Thanks for the reading suggestions Johnny, I will definitely have a look at those.

And yes Joanne, when I get myself in gear I will be targeting some of the people I deal with at work, so will follow up all your reading suggestions.

I think I will leave the bookcert course and cram as much knowledge into my head as possible, while trying to get a first client that will hopefully boost my confidence.

Thanks a lot everyone, you have been very helpful!

Bah, didn't spot the wide formatting when I replied before. I'll add line breaks for readability!

John: My only experience of Linux is that play I had with Mint that I'd put on a bootable USB stick - and that was on
a spare machine at a client, because my own laptop won't boot from USB no matter how I set the BIOS.

I've never had any need to try it before, because although Windows is not without many problems, it runs the
software I need and that's what mattered - and some versions, despite the problems, were half decent to use.

However, the shenanigans from Microsoft over the last year has basically seen them not just step over the line in
the sand, but but bring in the tools and remove the sand and replace it with a concrete base so that no more
lines can be drawn.

So it's changed from "it runs the software I need and that's what matters" to "unfortunately, I have to use it to
run some software" - one is just on the positive side of neutral, while the other is purely negative.

Once I have the new old machine set up with Linux Mint as one of the operating systems, I'll try again with Sage
and Wine (and also try VT and Wine, which I didn't before) in case I missed something, or there were problems
with the way I did it.

Johnny: So far, my only experience of Windows 10 is having to fix computers on which it has been installed - and
quite a number of them at that. This does not fill me with confidence about it, and certainly doesn't inspire me to
want to have it on my computer. And that's without considering the telemetry nonsense.

First thing I noticed was the Dell keyboard (if its not a Dell its made in the same factory), where do I fit into things?.... Why am I thinking that the response is going to be the difference between men, women and sad muppets!

Lol. Sainsburys supplied the keyboard and mouse - I at the time had already spent too much on a GPU I again at the time had the intention to upgrade them, then came the chair, so....I quite like dell though, especially alienware. At the time it was a smoking hot beast, it is a couple of years old now mind. Still kicks the ass of my macbook - aside from display.
