CIS Generic Notification
Permalink Closed

Hi All,

Thought i would pop a post up that may save some people some time! I received a Generic notification yesterday for a query on Subcontractor's Tax Treatment. Double checked my entire CIS return to make sure i hadn't messed up, searched the web, then bit the bullet to ring the helpline (Hate talking to HMRC!) and there is a recorded message to say to ignore any notifications you receive for querying tax treatment as they were sent out in error!

Arrgghh and hour of my life wasted!! no

We had an email but I hadn't had a chance to look at it so if it is that then I will ignore. Thanks.

Exactly the kind of good stuff we need on he, thanks Roxy. Although yet another bodge job by HMRC.....they have a service availability and issues page, but do they update it with everything? Nooooo, although the are some other CIS issues mentioned. Half the time they remain silent and have loads of us wasting time....I think they hate Accountants and bookkeepers and do it deliberately sometimes.

edited for typo

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position

I did have one a couple of weeks ago but I'd put a decimal point in the wrong place.

I would just quickly cast your eye over your return Sammy, just to double check! As Julie says a decimal place in the wrong place could be easy to do!!

I've had a couple of these but haven't got round to sorting them yet. Many thanks, that's saved me some time. Debbie

We've been receiving emails from HMRC saying we have a generic notification (no clue as to what it is about) in our CIS area, but nothing is there! We've had several now, we only have one CIS client. I contacted HMRC and they asked me to forward the emails to them, which I did. I received a reply saying they'll be in touch. Not heard anything back from HMRC yet but the client has since had a letter stating they haven't paid CIS due for a particular month so I'm assuming that's what they were about but who knows? Client believes they're up to date!
