I've just been informed an employee of one of my clients is transgender and is changing their name accordingly. (Female name to male name).
Any procedures I must go through or can I just go ahead and make any changes or does the employee need to inform HMRC and I wait to be told of any changes? Anything else I need to know?

I'm fairly sure that it is the employees responsibility to inform HMRC of any changes of name. If you make the changes on the payroll software when to make your FPS those details won't match the HMRC database and issues may occur.

I thought HMRC went on NI numbers and the unique number the payroll software generates? I know previously I had misspelled someone's name for a year and a half and never noticed. Neither did he as it was only on the second P60 it was picked up. Only initial on wage slip.

Hi
Just thinking back to my banking days and staff changing their name by deed poll, we used to get a copy of old id pre change (which would be on file already), see the original deed poll and take a copy/certify it as having been a copy forum the original or get a (notorious) copy and then in due course get the new Id.
I would say it's their responsibility to do tell HMRC but I think there is an element of responsibility on the part of the employe to get something in black and white, whether it's as far as the above, or just in part is up to them, but I would probably ask for a copy. Bit like showing a marriage certificate for change of name in those circs.
Or maybe my old employers went overboard?!
