Received tax refund twice
Permalink Closed

Hello, I stopped working in around July last year and had around 1312 of taxes overpaid. I did a tax refund through hmrc around month or two ago of this amount. Two weeks ago I also started working, and yesterday got my first salary which included this amount as well. So I got 1312 twice. What should i do? I am thinking to not tell anybody about it, just wait if they see it themselves and come back, then I will return money, if not I will keep it. How smart and safe is it to do it like I am planning? Thanks for you advices.

Did you fill out a starter declaration when you started your new job?  If so, you've ticked the wrong box.

How smart and safe is it to keep quiet?  Not very smart or safe at all.  HMRC WILL pick it up, believe me.

As a general rule here Joanne, what would you do if you were the OP?  Inform the wages clerk that you should have been on a week 1/month 1 basis, or phone HMRC and advise them of the mistake, and let them correct it through the tax code.  My first thought was the former, but thinking about it maybe the latter?

 HMRC, probably.

Was thinking - this could just be another spam post!  (usual obvious things showing, just currently missing the rubbish dump which might come later!)

Could be spam, you're right.

Lol at £8060,  I'm now thinking Catchphrase and the contestant says £8060.

"That's the right answer" says Roy Walker.
