Budget business rates?

Hi I've been looking through all the budget. My MIL was really worried about the new business rates which will affect ebusinesses. I have search but can't find any mention of it. She runs a etsy shop from her home, so not currently paying any rates. Has anyone seen any mention of something like this? I thought small business rate relief was increasing helping the small business. Thanks Lyndsey

Hi Lyndsey, unless MIL was using a room solely for etsy then she wouldn't be affected.

Small business rate relief is 100% on rateable value of less than £12000 (from 1st April) so even then she'd be highly unlikely to pay.

There is a massive revaluation of rates going on at the moment and bricks and mortar businesses are complaining that online retailers are getting off scot free whilst they have to pay high rates.  Maybe that's what you've picked up on?

However as far as I know its aimed at those who have out of town warehouse premises (Amazon a prime example) and don't pay nearly as much rates as the intown retail shops do. It doesn't affect people working from home unless the room they use is solely for business purposes, who would then be liable for business rates anyway.
