A polite request.

If you post a question on the forum, please do give people at least a day or so to respond to your query before chasing them offline to encourage them to check your question out. In fact it would also be preferable if your first reaction, if no response is forthcoming, is to bump your query so it appears at the top of the list again, but only once 24 hours have passed since the query was first raised, so that offline contact is a last resort.

Thank you.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position

I wish I saw this request earlier. I promise I will stop chasing people offline to encourage them to check my question out.

So long as your question isn't uber complex you'll get an answer, just bump it if its had no response after a few days.

I had someone ring me once, seeking advice about some Sage problem.

Ordinarily, I'd assume word of mouth, a client (regular or transient) who passed my details on to someone else with a problem so they could ring me. However, he specifically said he got my number from my website after reading my posts on the forum.

He hadn't put his question on here, and seemed reluctant to do so. I explained I'd rather he did that firstly because if it's something I can't answer, there's a good chance someone else would be able to, and also by it being on the forum it meant it's there for the benefit of anyone else who might hit upon the same problem.

He seemed to get a bit annoyed by that, and I don't believe he ever did post here - I'm guessing he was a business owner, rather than a bookkeeper or accountant.

Worst I had was being called on Christmas morning when the children were opening their pressies by someone with a VT problem.

Even beyond the obvious issues with that, the idea of payment didn't even occur as there are many readers here who believe that this is a commercial service and that someone somewhere is paying us to help anyone who has any problem with bookkeeping, or software, or their studies... I've even been called for job advice and references for people that I don't know!

With emails it's now got to the stage where even the private emails that I really need (and want) to answer are often being deferred for days so unless emails from here relate to an issue with the site or its from one of the core members then I just ignore many of them as they were taking up too much time. I think that we would all agree here that the one constant factor that we cannot change is the amount of time that we have. All that we can try to do is make the most effective use of the time we have and answering mails where people have often not even attempted to post on the site and it's not of a personal nature that cannot be posted is no longer going to illicit any response from me.

Thats no attack on anyone who has attempted to contact me off site. Just a polite reasoning why you don't get a reply.

Im taking to switching my phone off although that did prompt a frantic 8 text messages from a pal whoc couldnt get through to me on my mobile and was asking if I was ok!  Wouldnt mind but they all came through in the space of 5 minutes and I could just as easily have been on the phone!
