Bookkeeping, where do I start ,advice please
Permalink Closed

Hi I've recently passed IAB level 1 and 2 manual bookkeeping , I'm 1/4 way through level 3 , I'm going to don the computerised accounts (sage) with the AAT then start level 3 AAT (this is what they've advised me to do) .I want to work as a bookkeeper either employed or for myself but I don't know where to start. i haven't got any experience, everyday I search the jobsites and all the jobs ask for experience (feeling very disheartened at the moment).I really need some advise , am I doing the right courses ? Is there anything else I should be doing? At the end of these courses will I be prepared to take on the books of small businesses? How did you start out in your career?

i really enjoy all aspects of bookkeeping (what I've learned so far) and I've passed exams with ease . I would really appreciate anybody taking the time out to give me advice /point me in the right direction .

Hi,

Don't be hard on yourself.

It won't be easy, it is hard when you have to start from scratch.

Be prepared to put in the hours doing research - start slow, start with small businesses then in time turn to companies.

A laissez faire attitude is not the way to go, you sound like you want to do this so you're on the right path already.

The most important aspect to get correct is, after ensuring you've MLR cover and insurance, getting the correct opening balances from your new clients / old bookkeeper.

Once you've the correct details much is elementary- make sure you're reading and absorbing the theory of your studies.

The technical side is basic maths, the theory is the art and the science!

What's your plan? The new AATQB (sure that's the acronym)

As I say, it isn't easy, but it is worth while.

You've luckily found the best forum online.

Thank you for your reply . finding out the previous opening balance is exactly what I needed you to say , as silly as it sounds I've been panicking where do I start on a job .learning the theory is what I've been focusing on I stay awake at night researching more information as I want to fully understand everything . When I've finished level 3 I'll be (MIAB), I should be able to prepare end of period financial statements for sole traders ,partnerships and not for profit orgs. ive done all my studying at home by myself so I haven't been able to talk to anyone about these things .hopefully by the end of this course I should know where I'm heading .i think I'm just worry about when it comes to the real thing, that first job doing someone's books ,I want to make sure I do a precise job of it. I suppose confidence comes with experience .
Thank you for your help it's very much appreciated.

No problem.

Keep reading, keep asking questions and I'm sure you'll do just fine.

If you're using a training provider make sure you ask as many questions as possible - get your monies worth!
