self study- exam centers- problems with exams
Permalink Closed

Hi guys Some time ago I read on the forum that there are those people who self study at home and they try to pass aat exams in exam centers as ' independent students' . I didn't do too much research but I have reasons to think that exam centers only allow you to sit exam in their center as long as you are their student. They don't let ' random ' people to sit exam in their center. Is this common in UK that people who study at home have difficulties finding exam center that will allow those people to sit exam ?

Hi Rafal
You can sit exams as an independent student in lots of places. If you go on to the AAT site, sign in and you can search for the nearest exam centre with x number of miles from where you live.

Where are you based?

The big cities have places like Kaplan and BPP training centres. You can also use places like Pitman and some of the smaller independent colleges.

Usually there is a one off fee for doing this but be careful - for some exams (such as computerised bookkeeping and the likes of spreadsheet exams) they will need to be marked by a human rather than the computer program itself, so you will need to pay for invigilation and then also marking of the exam (these can be quite expensive!). Most do online booking, but I would always recommend you phone the centre and check, especially for the manual marked items as sometimes they want you to complete separate forms, plus you will need to ask them to actually supply the exam itself as generally they expect it to be supplied to them by another training company.

thanks Joanne for reply, can you tell me what do you mean when you say ' you will need to ask them to actually supply the exam itself as generally they expect it to be supplied to them by another training company' ? I am located in Wigan and it is not too far to Manchester or Liverpool .

Sorry! If you do the exam at eg Kaplan AND you were using First as a training company then First would need to send the exam info to Kaplan (then all you pay Kaplan for is the invigilation). If you are sitting with Kaplan as an independent then Kaplan would supply the exam itself, would provide invigilation of the exam and then also the marking. (ONLY applies to manually marked exams).

Ive done exams in Manchester - there are several companies in the centre including both Kaplan and BPP in the same building. Ive not priced any lately but Kaplan were by far the cheapest at the time.

Not sure about Liverpool. You may also find somewhere in Wigan itself.
