I have not had to disengage with a client up to now so was just looking for a bit of advice and the correct procedure on carrying this out.
I do not have a problem with dealing with the client side of the disengagement it is what I need to do to make HMRC aware that I no longer act for this client, do I just delete the client from my HMRC list and that will be sufficient or is there more to it, I seem to remember during my AAT studies something saying that you need to write to HMRC informing them that you are no longer acting on this clients behalf, and if this is the case what sort of information do I need to include in the letter?
Just wondered how others deal with this, any advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Hi Doug
Funny that but I was only thinking of this topic yesterday!
Covered in part a good while back http://forum.bookkeepers.network/t54472062/resigning-as-agent-for-paye/
Although since then Ive heard that it might well be better to also advise HMRC Agent Services in writing, in the main due to HMRC still phoning agents even afterthe online notice has been done. I got a phone call after doing such - they claimed not to know. Then I got a second call about two months later when they said they absolutely knew but they were clearly getting a bit desperate and were trying any old numbers held on file as they were from the debt department (both calls from them!)
The other reason I heard was that HMRC compiles statistics, as you know, based on the filing, payment and complaince behaviour but also links information to agents. So a pile of 'bad' clients can lead to more targetted approaches to agents/their other clients.
That said, even if you write to agent services the chances of that information getting disseminated to all the relevant parts of HMRC is probably zero!
When you do it online, you need to 'undo' for each service you have them signed up for!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
Thanks for the reply, read the old post and the link within it and I think just to be on the safe side (if there is one where HMRC are involved) I will cover all bases and do it online, by phone and also in writing
Cheers
