VT + and MTD for VAT
Permalink Closed

Worth bookmarking this page for those using VT+ for their VAT registered clients.  It was mentioned on aweb today and whilst there is no guarantee that this software will be adapted for MTD submissions, it'll be worth checking nearer the time rather than having to look round for alternative software.

 Hi John,

Thanks for the info, as you say though I think we will have to wait and see nearer the time

Southern Comfort, which was my tipple on boxing day and new years eve.  I've still got a 35cl bottle to drink, which was a Christmas present.

Other favourites are Vodka, Ruddles County (1) and Old Speckled Hen.

(1) I haven't tasted this in years but I'm saddened to discover it's Ruddles in name only, as the brewery was closed down and is now brewed by Greene King.  Having said that I have sampled GK before and it's not a bad pint.

I meant to ask Joanne what her avatar is.  Joanne?

Did I here my name being called?

Morning boys.

I looked at that software link, didn't get any further than the cluttered home page, but one to watch. Have you given it a try for the other bits John? Thanks for the link btw.

Couple of interesting discussions going on around that link and on margin schemes and MTD for VAT, which I'm watching with interest as these are the ones I do on sreadsheets, although unlike some folk it seems, I still then go in and journal in the software (bulk journal, not per line of stock).

My Dad loves Southern Comfort, but I don't think I've ever tried it. Will have to rectify that!! I'm not a fan of Stella, don't like beers and lagers, am a shorts girly! My drink is my current (since my 50th) favourite of an espresso martini. Espresso (now there's a surprise, not!), vodka and Kahlua ( a Mexican drink...I love Mexico!)

Anyone else adding a drink based avatar? Come on people....let's show what a bunch of alkies we need to be to do this job!!!

Hic.

Talking about alcohol at 8.30am, now that's my kind of girl!

Never been into drinking shorts always been a lager or cider drinker with the occasional bottle of wine thrown in for good measure, I remember drinking to much Southern Comfort when I was about 18  and getting very sick so never touched it again after that

Will be good for others to join in with their avatars

 Morning Joanne

No, but I like the look of the bank importer.  Timed perfectly because I have a years bank statements to do and this should speed up the job considerably.

The VAT program at the moment just saves you having to manually input on the gateway, so its only a couple of minutes saved, but if the guy upgrades it to allow for submission to the api when you have to, then it will be perfect.

Expresso Martini hey, sounds good.

Took a look - and noted that it's Excel-based. Not an option for me, then. Ho hum. :(

The good news is that potentially there could be software available that means not having to switch from VT+.  Lets see what happens in the next 14 months Vince, there may be different software that doesn't rely on excel, but if not, I'm happy to help out if I can  (assuming the NJT software is suitable)

"Lets see what happens in the next 14 months Vince, there may be different software that doesn't rely on excel"

That's what I'm expecting. End of the day, MTD could be an opportunity for a developer that works on Windows (and/or Linux) to produce something to fill the gap left by smaller players such as VT that don't themselves take up the mantle.

(The key point is writing desktop software that can interface with the HMRC site using its API; since VT don't already do this for VAT submissions, it's not a major surprise that they're not planning to do anything in respect of MTD. And I'm not 100% convinced El Gov won't continue to keep manual submission via the Gateway [or equivalent] an option for smaller businesses anyway).

"Loving the avatar Vince"

It seemed appropriate for the Christmas period - and reflects my opinion of the whole thing. :p

I've now updated it for the current drink-theme. Not my drink of choice* (and actually an empty glass anyway) - but it was in my parking spot at a client's premises one morning.

* I am a cider drinker. I drinks it all of the time. Oo-arr, oo-arr. (hic).

Edit: Added the footnote.

actually... VTs bigger than you might think. (not that you would believe it from their website).

For accounts software it's very common amongst a lot of practices. What doesn't seem to have taken off qute so well is the bookkeeping package VT transaction+ which is a criminal shame considering its ease of use.

How can you not have Excel in this game!! A whole world of wonder, merriment and profit lies behind Alt F11! biggrin

The last time I had Excel installed on a computer was my old Thinkpad. When I bought that, I specifically included the then current version of MS Office in the order in case I needed Word and Excel for compatibility: In case anyone sent me a document that OpenOffice wouldn't open. (At that point I still wasn't 100% confident in its abilities).

In practice, for the period I had that machine in use, I don't think I ever had to use it for that purpose - though I did use it for example whenever someone asked me how to do stuff in Excel; I'd either show them using my copy, or (if it was over the phone) I'd follow the steps through in mine in order to tell them, etc.

So for subsequent machines, Office hasn't been included. (And I'm now using LibreOffice, not OpenOffice).

As far as I'm concerned, it's about relying on Microsoft as little as possible. I'm stuck with them for the OS for Sage, VT, and a few other things - but that's life, unfortunately.

Hmm: www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/public-accounts-committee/news-parliament-2017/hmrc-performance-and-hmrc-estate-report-published-17-19/

"HMRC's transformation programme would have been less risky had it not attempted to do everything at the same time."

(That transformation programme includes MTD.)

Will this report result in things slowing down? Doubt it. Ho hum.
