Hello

Belated Happy New Year to all, can't believe time goes so quickly

I have just taken on a client who is VAT registered, has been for 16 months and hasn't submitted one VAT return. Seems not to be chased by HMRC, which I think is odd.

Is it just me, or is that unusual. Am I doing to0 many Self Assessments

Need to think about new MTD software at some point, however, thats another topic area. Will try to avoid Sage I think...

edit - spelling ;(

Hello Joanne

I currently use a number of Sage products - Sage one and the cheaper cash book offering. Just time to review something else, however, not sure if QB, Xero, Freeagent the list goes on...

I find Sage quite slow on bank rec and uploading journals etc

What Sage do you use?

I like Wave however, I am sure it will not be much use come MTD

Sorry when you mentioned sage, I thought you meant the re real thing - Sage 50 suite wink

I use Sage Professional, plus VT (including VT accounts for final accounts production).

I tend to avoid cloud for the many many reasons that have been covered in a million threads on here already.

Ive never found sage one particularly slow with doing the bank rec, except if you miss that tiny tick button with your mouse, but I have found it cumbersome with all the other keying. I can have a pile of invoices on in other software before Ive managed to get a couple on in that cloudy nonesense.

That said - if a client has it already or expresses a preference in using it then that is up to them as I dont believe in deciding what software they 'should' use, even if I think their decision might be wrong, unless of course by agreeing means they really are going to screw themselves over at some point now or in the future (after discussing growth etc plans, if they have any!).

Ive just had one suggest sage one for one business, as they successfully use it for another of their businesses. The latter business though they only use (and need) a cash book and its a simple business. The former business is complex, involves thousands of entries and the VAT margin scheme. My words - if you want to use sage one, then find someone else was met with some surprise, but acceptance once I had explained!

I think its too early to jump ship due to MTD. Some money is on it disappearing altogether, but I think the biggest bets are already on workarounds for most VAT businesses ready to go on in the early days.  Lets face it HMRC havent fully scoped it yet so how can anyone, software houses or us, expect to know what is going to happen.

On the VAT return issue - get your client to check his online account - I would hazard a guess that the address on there is completely wrong. He will need to phone HMRC, get his VAT up to date and keep it that way to avoid future penalties etc. I suspect he wont need to appeal any earlier ones though.

What software do you use for all your sole trader accounts prep?
