Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
You can't set up his BTA* but you can get him on your agent gateway. Go to the first screen and select Authorise a client and follow the steps.
* It's the client who's supposed to do it but I don't see the harm of you setting it up if the client is with you. He'll need to confirm what ID he has for verification purposes. Start here https://www.gov.uk/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services/register Once you have the GG no you can then set the BTA up.

Hi John
I thought I couldnt, but thought to try to assist. That said.....
Sush, keep quiet but I dont want this one! But Ive been asked about the BTA! I could sit with her but can be there for bloody hours when it should take a minute and I am running out of time (and its Christmas and I need to finish by Wednesday with the current work pile!)
I tried the link you posted, I dont want to register them for CT as their Accounatnt shouldve done that. So thought - I know, click on the link for the VAT - which is where Im going in circles cos it just demands a Gov Gateway.....you must have one (insist HMRC, must, absolutely bloody must, how dare you even suggest that you havent!). Am I clicking on the wrong (later) link? I opted for register to file returns online under the VAT section. Then there is a phone number - which in truth I tried to phone, spent 30 minutes getting through only to be cut off by the numpty that answered! So I gave up!
She is VAT registered. Plus no, not and doesnt need to be in MTD.
AAGGGGGHHHHH.

Sorry Joanne, I thought you wanted to register a new service for her, so slightly wrong link. But still click on that link and go to sign in (first one under content) once you see the gateway page requesting user id and password, click on create sign in details and set the gg up with the Company credentials. Its been a very long time since I've done it myself but i think you can then just add any services to it and that is the effectively the bta.
