Client has liabilities to report for 2018-19 but hasn't received a notice to file as his last self employment discontinued in 2017-18
Only just received the paperwork so I'm going to struggle to get the return done by 31st Jan, but am I right in thinking that the £100 penalty won't apply?

If no notice to file has been received then no £100 penalty but they may still be charged interest on any unpaid tax due on 31st Jan, also may have penalties for failure to notify which are also tax geared.
Hope you are enjoying January as much as i am

Agree with this.
Isnt January good Doug? Opportunity to earn bigger bucks than usual.
That said, unless it was a double fee, I wouldnt be doing the one you only got yesterday John, until into February, on principle! They have had 298 days to get the info to you. 298!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks both. I very much doubt it will be done, as I've a major one tomorrow, also late but came in last week.
298 days that's disgusting!! There's this one guy as well where it would take him all of 5 mins to get his paperwork together and its the same every year, leaves it til the very last day. I told him off this morning as I looked in the mirror!!!!!

You bad lad John, made me laugh

Isnt that the usual plumber type trick - always fix other peoples leaks but always have a dripping tap in their own house?!!
Must admit to leaving my Accounts to the last day one year, but wont do that again after there was a software failure and total headless chicken panic in this household! My tax return was done pre Christmas, but am determined to do it all on 6 April next time (oh, if only the Banks produced the certificates of interest hat early all would be well - lets blame it on them shall we!!)
