MTD and VT from April.
Permalink Closed

Hi, I've come across your site and I was wondering if you could help.
I use VT Transaction plus and I have been using the MTD export function (the button on the VAT return page) to paste the VAT return figures into a spreadsheet. My customer then uses bridging software to file the return online. Is it still OK to use this method after the "soft landing" period ends. I.e. is it ok to use the export button and paste into Excel, or is this not classed as a digital link?

I have attempted to try the MTD for Excel function, as an add-on in Excel, but its not working, saying files are missing or "class not registered".

Thank you.

Hi
So hows about an intro before we start. We always ask newbies!

Usual stuff - what prof body do you belong to, do you work for yourself or in a practice/ firm, who is your MLR with, are you a bookkeeper or accountant, what qualifications, how long in role, where up to in your studies-what exams passed/with what body/who your MLR is with/in midst of doing, where based, what you did before this role? That sort of thing. Helps get to know you but also how best to pitch answers.

Please also add your first name so that it appears under the signature bar on your posts? Saves everyone looking it up each time!! (Edit profile --->signatures)

You are not allowed to use cut and paste. You just 'export' and save.

Best to add the 'Add in' before you export. What excel are you using on your own PC?

Sorry, I work part time as a self employed bookkeeper. My MLR is via HMRC. I used to work as an accounts assistance in a large accountancy practice, but gave up to raise my family. I only have 5 customers; does make me wonder sometimes whether its worth it after paying MLR etc, but it helps to pay the bills. I don't do any tax work, I merely input data and create draft accounts. Their accountants oversee the final accounts and tax returns etc. But one client like to file their own VAT returns. Not sure if after March we will be fully compliant with the digital link.

When I click on export it doesn't automatically paste into excel, I need to open it and paste the figures. Is that not normal?

I have Excel 365

Thank you for your help.

Hi Sarah

Welcome to the forum.  Thanks for the question as I was wondering the same myself (albeit it in a slightly different way).  Think I have the answer now but out of courtesy I'll let Joanne answer it as she was first to respond. (and see if I'm right with my answer lol)

Thanks John.

I'm still battling with Excel trying to get the add-in to work. If we can't continue using the export function, not sure what I'm going to do!

Yay... Got Excel plugin to work. It only works on 32 bit versions! So... That means I can import the vat return figures digitally. So no copy and pasting involved. I'm assuming I can then still send the spreadsheet to my customer to continue filing via bridging software. Sorry thinking aloud! Hope this is correct.

Is there a reason they are insisting on filing it?    If you are preparing it, I would just get them to authorise it  and then you file it - you can show it has been filed from the various bits you can get out of VT MTD.   Job done.

Otherwise my understanding is how you go about sharing the data is the key to remaining compliant and ensuring they do not copy and paste it into their own bridging software when they get the file.  Not knowing what software they use and how it integrates with the export you do I cannot comment.   When you say 'send' - I would suggest you just save to a file sharing folder (usb, dropbox, onedrive, etc)

How did you get on with the guidance notes?   Some of them are as clear as mud!

I wondered orf as well lol.

The way that I see it, cutting and pasting into an MTD ready file is fine but you can't cut and paste individual cells, so Sarah using the VT MTD export button, and then pasting into a spreadsheet which is then used to file the data is fine.

Likewise I use the spreadsheet option on VT, copy the 9 boxes and the numbers, and paste it into taxfiler, which by my understanding is fine BUT VT copies the EU figures as none rather than 0.00, which means TF doesn't accept, so I have to past into a spreadsheet and alter none to 0.00 and then copy again to past into TF, which I don't think is allowed.  If anyone knows how I can alter none to 0.00 in VT I would be extremely grateful.
