I have been approached by a potential new client, who is looking to claim the self employment grant.
It looks like his profits are ok 2018/19 45k, 2017/18 48k and 2016/17 35k. Expenses are minimal.
His income has pretty much dried up as most people are stopping at home, making it difficult for him to operate.
One spanner in the works is that he hasn't previously registered as self employed but given the 4 week window I could at least get his 18/19 income declared, yes?
The reason the 2016/17 income was low as he was not as careful on one of his jobs and the Government moved him to a new address and order him to "stay at home" for 3 months.
Thoughts?

Hi John
So you are suggesting this one has paid no tax over this whole period?
Not sure I understand what you mean by the ''not as careful on one of his jobs and the Government moved him to a new address and order him to "stay at home" for 3 months.'' How could you become comfortable that he would be declaring all of his income for that year?
What would his views be to submitting back SAs, whether it is a yes or no to the grant, if he will then end up with fines and penalties etc and how can you mitigate the 'deliberate/concealed' argument?

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
You should check out answers with reference to the legal position
I realised this morning about that and thought nah, nothing doing on BKN, more fool me.
Last time I try to help that little tyke!!!!! lol
Oooo, look Doug - you have hit 1000 posts - congrats.
1000 posts, and I still remember my first avatar of Mr Bean
Similar thing though to what John asks, what would happen if a client was entitled to the full amount of the SE Grant but he owed HMRC in back taxes, would they keep the grant the same as they would if someone was due a rebate or would they have to pay it because of the circumstances of why the grant is being given?

hahahaha I can't say you were April fooled though because it was half past 12 when you posted. I thought the Gov ordering him to "stay at home" for 3 months might have given it away that this potential client was in fact a burglar.
I do actually have a new client just come to me, newly registered for self employment and two years tax returns to do. It'll be interesting to see whether they do withhold the grant if he doesn't pay his taxes before June.
Another one has considerable outstanding taxes so again it'll be interesting to see what happens in that case as well (this one is still working but shutdown could come at any time)
I've also found today, from another client, that those who are eligible for this grant won't be able to claim universal credit, between now and June, which is going to be tough on some self employed who've suddenly lost their income overnight. At least they will get it eventually though.
