Please can you help!? I am just starting up as a bookkeeper and have been asked by a customer if I can do his self assessment. Do I need any qualifications to do this? I have AAT Level 2 currently.
Who is your licence with? Does AAT know you are a bookkeeper acting with no qualifications? You have not done ethics yet, thats AAT level 3, but they clearly state you should not be acting on SAs
Thank you for your reply. Like I said I am just starting up so I haven't yet done any work for anyone! That is why I am asking the question. I don't understand what you mean by me having no qualifications, I have completed my AAT Level 2! Is that not a qualification?
AAT level 2 is a qual, but is basic, starter stuff, not enough to be a bookkeeper. That is level 3 at the VERY LEAST. So yes, sorry, you are unqualified at this moment. You have no licence to act. Once you have passed all level 3 then you can APPLY for a licence from AAT. At the moment you cannot work for anyone, on anything bookkeeping or accountancy related.

Interestingly I have just gone through some of the posts you have commented on and most of your replies to people are actually quite rude.
Thank you for your time, which I think you have wasted to be honest, I will ignore your comments and wait for someone to reply to my post that actually knows what they are talking about!

Think what you like. But I am an AAT/ACCA trainer as well as fully qualified practising Accountant. Also does not make me wrong. Folk always think they can run before they can walk. Look up the AAT ethics. You should not be practising on members of the public, its grossly unfair on them and leaves you wide open to be sued.

I have worked in an accounts department for 6 years. I am simply asking a question regarding the self assessment, which is surely the idea of the forum.
The question has been answered by two of us. The point of the forum. Which may include stopping people damaging the reputation of the industry and breaking the rules. Doing an SA when you have no licence and no experience is bad customer service.
After reading your responses to others questions, I can see that you and BMM are peas in a pod as far as your communication skills go. How lucky was I to have you both read my post.
Have you done a self-assessment tax return before? there are lot of things to include that may have nothing to do with bookkeeping, especially now with the SEISS grants, CJRS and all the loans, as well as Capital Allowances, child benefit, pensions etc etc
Not trying to put you off as there is no law against you doing it although AAT may not let you so best to give them a ring first and then make sure you have PII set up and that you register for MLR

I am not a member of AAT, but I know that my bookkeeping association will not let members carry out self assessment unless they have passed the SA exam. Also you cannot practice without a licence and money laundering supervision. It might be worth checking with AAT? I keep meaning to do the exam but never seem to find the time! But good luck with whatever you decide to do.
Thank you for your replies and advice Diamond8 and Artois. I tried to call AAT for advice yesterday but was waiting for a long time so came on here instead. I did wonder if that would be the case regarding the SA. Thank you again.

Indeed. Quite the coincidence. The forum did used to be friendly and there are still nice people around
