Hello,
My name is Simon and I want to retrain as an accountant/bookkeeper. I am thinking about studying by reading and watching youtube videos. I have a phone app that helps with learning the double entry system as well. I would like to know where I can find current standards to be met for the qualifications. I have an OCR 1 book keeping book. However, the OCR qualification is now dead. So this book is a little old. What is the best current book to use for a beginner please? The OCR book has greyed out areas that indicate information specific for exams.

Does the book I study matter when choosing a qualification to take? I was thinking about taking AAT and becoming an accountant. I am not sure if this would cover bookkeeping specifically though.

Watching You tube videos is a bad idea. How do you know what is out of date? You dont. Just do a proper course or buy up to date textbooks.

I should imagine the details of VAT rules change quite regularly.
But have the fundamental principles of bookkeeping changed much in the last few hundred years ?

Hi Simon,

I'm in a similar position to yourself.

The AAT offer accountancy courses as well as bookkeeping courses,

there's a Level 2 course and a level 3 course (forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know)

See these links:

https://www.aat.org.uk/qualifications-and-courses/bookkeeping/level-2-certificate-bookkeeping

https://www.aat.org.uk/qualifications-and-courses/bookkeeping/level-3-certificate-bookkeeping

Another is doing the ICB  (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) exams.

For details on that option see this link:

https://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/Study--Qualifications/Current-Qualifications

I currently wondering if there's any study or research out there that suggests whether the

AAT bookkeeping courses are in any respect better or worse than the ICB bookkeeping courses.

If anyone has a view on this, please chip in.

Ketogene :)
