I was involved in accounts and payroll 20 years ago, and I'm now looking to extend my horizons and get back into accountancy by taking an accounting course, such as the AAT or CAT.
My query is though, I am now 48 and whilst not over the hill yet, would there realistically be many job opportunities out there if I were to get an accounting qualification? Or would employers tend to look for the younger recruit?
If anyone has any experiences I would be grateful for your comments.
Have you thought about ringing a firm of accountants, or a specialist accountancy recruitment firm and asking them? They should be able to give you some idea of what they look for in a prospective employee. Guy
Although I'm self employed now, I previously worked for a firm of Chartered Accountants. The partners there actually preferred to take on older workers, as the younger ones either didn't stay very long, or just didn't seem interested in learning.
I'm not saying that all mature job seekers will find it easy to get a placement, but if you show enthusiasm and a willingness to learn (together with the ability to survive on a low initial salary) you should be able to find a suitable position. Just don't give up!
I think that just like with everyone else you have to show what you bring to the table. If you have been in the business for a while, can you bring in business? At the very least you have potential business and should focus on that.
