Do I need to do payroll?
Permalink Closed

Hi Just found this forum, hope someone can help?

Is it possible to just set up a business doing bookkeeping without doing payroll and tax returns and succeed?

Cheers!

I run a book-keeping business and offer a payroll service. I don’t however do tax returns, I leave that to my clients accountants. You should only take on work which you both are qualified to do and want to do. If you don’t want to do payroll, contact a local payroll company, or firm of accountants with a payroll bureau. They will be more than happy to do your clients payroll. I know many book-keepers who stick to basic book-keeping and have successful businesses.

Thanks for the advice. I really want to offer a first class book-keeping service, and do my clients justice. I just don't want the hassle and additional swotting up to do payroll!

Thanks for the tip regarding payroll bureau's and accountants!

Cheers!

I agree but I have found tht once you get a client in the door you want to do whatever you can to keep all the work.  If you don't do payroll and suggest someone else, you run the risk that person might start to do bookkeeping and try to get your client's full business.  If nothing else you should try to get a reciprocal arrangement with someone who does the services you do not do (and vice versa) and refer back and forth.
