Marketing a new book-keeping business
Permalink Closed

Hi

Like a lot of people on this forum, I'm starting my own book-keeping business, part-time at the moment and hope to progress to full time in due course.

I've read a lot about client aqcuisition and I know most book-keepers obtain work by word of mouth. My problem is that as I'm starting out I don't have any clients to recommend me to others. I know there are other marketing methods I can use, but I'm not sure how effective they are and don't want to waste money.

Any advice would be glady appreciated!

Bob

Hi Bob

I have found the best way to get new clients is through referrals, so you do need to network. Signing up with your local business association is a good step. Even if you don't yet have any clients, just meeting people and introducing yourself (remember your business cards!) is enough to get the referral ball rolling.

I have also had some success with leaflet drops and sending letters to local businesses. I haven't advertised in my local paper yet, but I'm keen to do so to raise my profile locally.

I've been advertising in my local paper for over a year now. I've had some success, but I believe advertising in a paper is a long-term thing and is best really for creating brand awareness.

My tip for advertising in newspapers is to pay weekly for an ad. Don't be persuaded to pay for a year, even for a discount. If you just do it weekly, and leave it until the last minute to put your advert in, the sales rep will normally contact you with some offers to temp you - guaranteed! These offers will beat the discount on a years entry hands down.

All the best

Man
