I have just passed my level ICB Exam and am a newly registered member, and was wondering what steps i should take next, as i have had finance and accounting experience but not in being solely a bookkeeper.
Hi mrumbelow, it's not clear from your post what your intended career path is? Do want to go it alone and run your book-keeping business, or do want a job as a book-keeper?
i would eventually love to run my own business but as have only theoretical knowledge at the moment, would be looking to work for a company to start with
I think your best bet is to try and get a relevant job in the industry. You could approach local firms of accountants or book-keepers to see if they have any positions available. Firms are often more inclined to take on newbies if they approach them direct, as opposed to via a recruitment agency where they would incur substantial fees.
When I started as a book-keeper many moons ago my first child had just started school. I didn't have any relevant experience so I offered my services to a local charity for a few hours each week. I was offered a role in their accounts department. It was both incredibly rewarding and fantastic experience. It also looked good on my cv, and although I can't be sure it helped me get my foot in the door of a firm of chartered accountants, I'm pretty sure it did!
