IHi there, I'm new to this forum but I hope someone can help me out there in bookkeeping land.  I'm looking to get a qualification in bookkeeping and am really stuck as to which is best to go for as there are so many conflicting opinions.  All of my experience is computerised and that's fine for what I'm doingh now, but I'm looking to change direction soon and would like to go self employed bookkeeping in the near future.  I have no qualifications at all in this field so could someone advise a possible route for me.....  please before I go blind searching!

Hi Bobbi

A warm welcome to the forum

There are two major awarding bodies which you can consider for becoming a qualified book keeper...IAB & ICB. With my knowledge IAB is the longest established & infact the first institution...it is also highly regarded . But even ICB is equally respected.

My best suggestion is go through their websites in detail, look at the courses they offer, you can also get training providers on their website & even recommended books to study for respective courses, check out all the options, decide upon which suits u best & get into. Also u can talk to them abt ur requirements & suitability.

The website links can be found below.

http://www.iab.org.uk/

http://www.book-keepers.org/

http://www.aat.org.uk/

Also u can consider looking at AAt which is for accounting qualifications. But if u r thinking to practice on ur own after qualifying , then I would recommend u to go either for IAB or ICB.

Cheers

Anu

Thank you Anu,

I was considering IAB most of all, as I had a look at their courses once and still have some of the manuals. It was however many years ago and I expect things have changed now.

Also, whilst I am fully conversant with Sage Line 50 (have used Sage for 30yrs) I have no qualification so that would fit in well with the combined course I have been looking at.

Thanks again
Bobbi
