Self-Assesment Tax Return guide from HMRC
Permalink Closed

I am interested in doing Tax Return's and intend to do the Self-Assesment Tax Return module with the ICB level 3, they recommend however that you obtain the above guide direct from HMRC before completing this module, however  all I can find on their website is various electronic guides you can access over the internet, I would prefer a paper manual, does anyone know if you can obtain one still from HMRC.

Hi Richard,

After much trawling around the HMRC website I found this...
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/worksheets/sa150.pdf

It is a tax return guide..whether it's what you need I'm not sure. If it is, let me know because I am going to do the same ICB module later this year!

Cheers!

Rob

Hi Rob

Not quite sure this is the right one, but I will give ICB a call tomorrow and let you know which one they mean, it could be their site is a little out of date and these manual's are now online and no longer available in paper form.

Hi guys

I believe the guide you need is possibly the new SABK4 which the HMRC are currently updating so no copy is available at present !!!

This is the new merged document for SA/BK4 Guide to record keeping and SA/BK8 the self assessment guide

unfortunately not - this is what the HMRC website says :

SABK4 - Self Assessment - A general guide to keeping records

We are currently updating and merging the information contained within SA/BK4, Self Assessment a general guide to keeping records and SA/BK8, Self Assessment your guide. This means these publications are no longer available to download or view. We hope to have the new and improved guidance available very shortly. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The ICB now sell a manual in their shop....it's very expensive at £60.00 or if you are a member £40.00, I'm saving for it myself here is the link

I don't think this manual on its own will be enough to pass their exam. I have their exam just now and I bought this manual beforehand. It has helped me with things I wouldn't have understood just reading the HMRC guides but similarly the HMRC guides have bits in them better explained than the ICB manual.

So if you can get a hold of "Self Assessment Tax Returns Guide - 6 April 2009 to 5 April 2010"  (the Big Book) it will be of great help to you. You would need to register as an agent with HMRC first.

All of the leaflets in the above guide can easily be found here :
http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kbroker/hmrc/forms/start.jsp

Slightly related - is there an electronic reader that can view these pdf files? I've seen various readers but they don't seem to display things they way they are on a computer. Maybe takes too much power - I'm not a geek I don't know this sort of things.

Hi Peasie,

I can see the pages fine on my phone (windows mobile) but it is only a 4.3" screen...I have no experience with e-readers. I am sure the new amazon kindle would do it perfectly.

When I looked at the screen on one of these before it wasn't what I wanted but looking more closely at other screens (pdf) it might just do the trick. Just as long as I remember I'm not supposed to write on the pages. Thanks.

Hi Peasie,

Great feedback about the ICB manual, glad you found it helpful, if you want to give us feedback about areas to improve it just ping an email over.

Always looking for feedback and ways to improve.
