Voluntarily Registering for VAT
Permalink Closed

I am just setting myself up as a self employed bookkeeper.
Although it is highly unlikely that my turnover will reach the VAT threshold, is there any benefit to me becoming voluntarily registered for VAT?
As I am just starting out, I have no idea how many of my potential clients will be VAT registered and how many will not be.
Has anyone got any experience or thoughts on this?

Thanks

Christine

Hi Christine,

I think the only plus point is that you may be taken more seriously in terms of it carrying more weight, like being a limited company !

I am not vat registered or limited myself, but I can see the advantage if you are thinking of taking on larger clients perhaps.  Then again, I have a couple of clients who are vat registered and limited, the  that fact that I am not  has not come up in conversation or been a hinderance.

It depends on how big you want to go ?

Julie

Thanks for your input Julie.

It is encouraging to know that although you yourself are not VAT registered, it is no barrier to successfully finding clients.

Christine
