I am just setting myself up as a self employed bookkeeper. Although it is highly unlikely that my turnover will reach the VAT threshold, is there any benefit to me becoming voluntarily registered for VAT? As I am just starting out, I have no idea how many of my potential clients will be VAT registered and how many will not be. Has anyone got any experience or thoughts on this?
I think the only plus point is that you may be taken more seriously in terms of it carrying more weight, like being a limited company !
I am not vat registered or limited myself, but I can see the advantage if you are thinking of taking on larger clients perhaps. Then again, I have a couple of clients who are vat registered and limited, the that fact that I am not has not come up in conversation or been a hinderance.
