Getting those first few clients

Can anyone give me some advice as to the best methods to gain clients and what has worked for them?
Did you send letters to firms of Accountants or visit local businesses and leave a business card?
I am in the process of setting up as a Sole Trader, have my business cards and should see my first advert early next month.
Also if using Sage what number of licences would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

Do lots of networking, form alliances with accountants, banks, solicitors etc, have a client referral scheme, optimise your website.
