Taking over from a dubious book keeper
Permalink Closed

Hi there,

I have just had a very interesting day.

Long and short the previous book keeper for this very elderly woman has siphoned all her money and left her high and dry.  I am very relunctant to just walk away and leave her to it - considering that this person was more than a book keeper to her and actually looked after her very well - except he did so by siphoning her money and by the looks of it keeping all the monies to himself.

My question is - how do I got about helping this lady?  This lady is in her 90s and I would really like to get the business back on track - she runs a well respected agency in her industry.

What should be the first order of business?  What do I need to establish first.

To make matters worse, there are absolutely no records whatsoever and we don't really want to alert her clients lest they take their business elsewhere.

Where do I start considering I have no records to go on?

I would really appreciate any suggestions!!

If you are  really sure you want to get involved in this mess, then you will need to rebuild the accounts. You can do this by requesting a copy of the latest accounts that were prepared by her accountant. If she runs a limited company you may be able to get these from companies house, although they may be abbreviated. These accounts will give you some opening balances which will be your starting point.

You should then request copy bank statements/credit card statements etc from your clients bank or lender. You can also contact your clients suppliers who will be able to provide you with statements. I would summarise the bank statements into some sort of cash book (manual or computerised).

Hope this helps?
