Self Employed HGV Driver self assessment
Permalink Closed

Can anyone help me with this.

I am completing 4 years self assessments for a client who is a self employed HGV driver.  He only uses his own vehicle for travelling to and from a place of work where he drives a companies HGV.  Are there any allowable expenses he can claim for such as a % of office space at home to carry out any phones calls, paper work etc. I believe meal allowances are disallowed.  He doesn't do overnight stops.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Hi,

I assume he does driving for different companies, and not always the same one?

Bear in mind if you claim a percentage of your home as office, it may affect you when you sell, for example capital gains tax.

The HMRC have a list of allowable expenses on their website, have a read.

Hi

He drove for 2 companies.  I believe as long as there is not a designated room within the house for sole business use then no capital gain would apply should the property be sold at a later date.  From what I can gather, there isn't really much in way of allowable expenses he can claim for.

Thanks for you help.

Hello You can claim an amount for Use of home as office. I think the HMRC has an allowance
you can claim have a look at their website. As regards Capital Gains Tax i do not think it applies
to a main residence only a second home. With regards expenses as he travels to work and back
in his own car he can claim Petrol / Diesel , Stationery, Postage, Telephone, any other expenses that relates
to him operating as a self employed driver. Remember that you have to add back a percentage
of private expenses on his tax return for Petrol/Diesel, Phone. Have a look at HMRC Website
about Self Assessment.

Hi Davey,

You are right that second homes generally incur CGT. However, there are a number of things that can affect your exemption for your primary residence. On of these is using a room exclusively for business purposes.
