can a self employed person put through cough medicine as an expense
Permalink Closed

Hello all, may sound daft re: the above. But I'm not 100% sure, I have been given a receipt from a self employed client. Would that count as first aid as an expense or should it be disallowed altogether.

Sorry I am on a bit of a learning curve, lol

Hi Lorraine,

Not come across this before - if you purchased a first aid kit from a chemist would it contain cough medicine ?? I think not.

Hi Lorraine, I don't think cough medicine would count as first aid either.

I agree it's not first aid, but I was thinking maybe you would see it in a medicine cabinet, but then he is self employed, and doesn't own any premises for business so then it's really an item for personal use.

I won't be putting that through the accounts then!

Thank you for your replies.

If the client in question is a professional singer or singing coach then I would consider putting it through. After all, it is to support their job! It is a grey area and I expect some comments on this but, as I said, it depends on their employment!

I would suggest that this is not an allowable expense.

I think HMRC has a saying is the Expense Wholly and exclusively for the business. To verify whether it is allowable or not.
