Expenses advice please
Permalink Closed

Hi, can I have some advise please. I got a new client, plumber, sorted out some of his paperwork but he has since said a family member has offered to do the book-keeping for him which is okay as he had paid me for what I had done. The advise I'm after is that when I mentioned to him that he had personal expenses (such as Marks & Spensers, tv licence, etc) showing in his business bank statements, he said that he wanted to put all the expenses through that he could and shouldn't a book-keeper do that for him if he wanted. What do you do when a client insists on putting personal expenses in as business expenses when they obviously aren't. I'm quite glad that his family member has offered to do his book-keeping because I could see him getting annoyed when I didn't want to put his personal expenses in as business.
Many thanks,
Linda.

They obviously aren't business related, I would tell them that they are not allowed to put them through and will not put them through the accounts.

Also I would advise not to use a business ac for personal transactions at all.

Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks, I did say that to him and that if he wanted to pay for personal things he should draw money out as a wage instead of using his business ac, that was when he got a bit annoyed. It just concerned me that I could be putting off clients when I really want and need the work, but your advise makes me feel better.
Many thanks.

I think he's trying his luck! and those items would need to be put through as drawings, as it's personal expenses, I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Can't believe he said thta you should do it if he asks! cheeky
