Looking to do a bookkeeping course as I want a change in career.  Had a visit from Home Learning College yesterday and the guy suggested Level II Manual Book-Keeping and Computerised Book-Keeping course.  At almost £1400 I found this a bit expensive and said that I would need to think about it. Want to study from home as easier than having to attend college at a predetermined date and time and wanted flexibility due to work and family.  Has anyone done any similar course with other companies or are you just as well sourcing course material yourself and studying in your own time and then applying to sit the exams.   Had a look on internet but companies don't tend to advertise their fees.  Suppose they like to try and get you to buy when they meet you face to face.

Hi
I have done a couple of icb courses with training link and have foung the course materials and tutor support were very good .The courses seem to be reasonably priced and the prices are on the website for you to see

Don't touch HLC with a barge pole. You can certainly get this much cheaper. I did level one and two with them. The course was fair, the support was non existent.

There are other better, far cheaper providers. Do a quick search through this forum and you'll find lots to choose from.

I have used Premier training for Payroll and have found them very good, they have a website might be worth a phone call, they are very helpful on the phone.

Hi Kymbee

Bear in mind that you could study independently if you wished.  I paid a high amount for level 1 and found the support non existent.  I then went on to study levels 2 - 4 simply purchasing the textbooks at a cost of about £25 and paying for the exams.

As long as you are self disciplined I'm sure you would find this perfectly acceptable solution.

I used Ideal Schools last year as mentioned above for level I and II and found them well priced. They also offer monthly payments (which I think most do)
The text books were easy to understand in easily managed 1 or 2 hour sessions and there was plenty of chances to practice as well as sending assignments off for marking.

I also found it useful to buy a couple of up to date past papers from the ICB so I had some idea of what the current exam would entail.

Anther plus is no-one will be calling round with the hard sell like HLC.

I passed both exams (98% and 100%!!) and am now practising about 12 hours a week.

I did find it useful to have someone on the end of a phone but saying that only really had a couple of queries.

Thanks Lots to Learn and Alis.

Had thought about just buying the books and studying that way but think I would prefer to have someone on hand in case I get stuck. 

I've had a look at the Ideal Schools website and think I will go down this route.

Re Payroll Management

My colleague did this with IDEAL Schools.....was impressed with the package in terms of price, books, software etc. She said that IDEAL have fully licensed software (not 180 day training software) which she liked...it is now registered to her and she can use it. Also I think IDEAL update the SAGE software as SAGE change them...so it is always up to date. Don't know if that would bother you or not. Good luck with it all anyway.
