can anyone help, on the above form what do i put in the boxes labelled agent codes and client reference.
The reason for this is that I have a new client and they would like me to tell hmrc about them starting to do self employed work, I have been told to fill out form 64-8 by hmrc......I am stuck on the above points. I haven't signed up to be an agent before, is this all i need to do to be an agent?
Another qu. is that I have been asked by my client who has a tax deadline of 31st oct 09, and would like to file online to give more time, I am worried that by the time that the 64-8 would be sorted it would be past the deadline even though they want to do it online. aaarrrgghh doe s this make sense....
has anyone else on this forum been in this situation and what did you do???
sorry i haven't doen this before i am panicking a wee bit!!!!!!!!
Clients reference is the reference you allocate to your client. The agent reference will be allocated you by HMRC. Ring your local office and register as an agent. They will then send you out codes allowing you to file online. Give me a shout if you want more information. Regards Peter
you still need the 64-8 to register you as the agent for the client. You could file online without it but it is better to register first. Once you are registered with the revenue then you will be able to lodge the 64-8 on line, providing that you have the clients UTR and NH No. The revenue will then send an "unlock" code to your client. You enter the code and then you have access to the clients tax records.
Your client can either complete a CWF 1 and forward it to the revenue, they can ring 08459154515 to register or they can complete the form online. Go to HMRC.gov and type in "Registering for self employment". All info is there. And yes, NH No is national insurance number.
Kind regards Peter

If your client wants you to register them as self employed (sole trader I am presuming) you will need to fill in form CWF1 (you can print off HMRC website) This is called 'becoming self employed and registering for NI contributions and/or tax'. Your client will need to sign the form. keep a copy for your records.
You will need to register as an agent I beleive this is through the Government Gateway Website. You will then be issued with an agent code.
You will need to fill in a 64-8 for each client if you require to send Self Assessment returns online, or if you wish to discuss tax details with HMRC on their behalf.
If you forward Self Assessment returns online you have until 31 January 2010. This should give you plenty of time to register as an agent and forward 64-8 to tax office.
thank you both for your replies, I have now registered to be an agent, and will get my client to sign the 64-8 and CWF1, I realise now that there is no rush as the online deadline is 31/01/2010.
You have both made me feel better about the situation more importantly how to deal with it!
Filing the return on line notifies them of that fact, you don't have to write or ring to do that. Don't forget that within 2 years all agents will have to file all returns on line anyway.
